JOSS CARTER'S HORROR FAVOURITES
AN INTERVIEW WITH LOVE HORROR
As a creature performer, stunt artist, contemporary dancer and all-round physical chameleon, Carter has moved and morphed his way through everything. His approach to horror isn’t just about jump scares or shock factor—it’s about transformation. Visceral, disturbing, boundary-pushing transformation.
For Love Horror, Carter dives deep into the murky depths of his psyche to share the films that have most influenced him—not just as a performer, but as an artist of body and spirit. From cursed VHS tapes to black metal-laced dreamscapes and the cinematic equivalent of a decaying myth, his selections are as unnerving, poetic, and unflinchingly intense as his performances.

AS
AAMON THE BLACK

FAIRY DUST tells the story of Saga, a neurodivergent tomboy in 1980s England who would rather spend her days alone fighting imaginary monsters and her nights dreaming of a beautiful princess to avoid the problematic realities of growing up too fast in a world that’s ready to eat her whole.
This original script is a surreal fairytale about needing to escape a reality not meant for us, and the harm that comes with staying too long in the imaginary worlds we build for ourselves. At its core, it’s about the struggle for identity when life offers no roadmap. Most of all, it’s about finding the courage to push through, even when we feel like we're stuck in one place.

REVIEWS & INTERVIEWS
"From the dark, emerges: Rumpelstiltskin. Superbly designed in full-body make-up, the creature draws favourable comparisons with the orcs of Peter Jackson’s, Lord of the Rings trilogy. Of course, the monster is only as good as its performance, and in Joss Carter, Rumpel is a delightfully menacing character. With a dose of Gollum, Carter enthusiastically plays his imp as a cockney Pennywise, an insidiously playful performance, physically small, but cunning and deceitful, Carter eats up the dialogue and chews his way through every scene. In this character, Andy Edwards may have his own franchise icon, in the same vein as the Wishmaster series".
"As the titular goblin, Carter gives an enjoyably grotesque performance, which is backed up by a solid creature design."
"I have to give huge props to Joss Carter who is under the prosthetics and make-up. His performance is playful without becoming comical but when he needs to be evil he delivers in spades."
"When unmasked, he leans into the long-established grotesque look we expect, but his first appearance is unforgettable. The way his costume blends with the shadows of the dungeon could make him a horror icon in his own right."
"Carter’s wheedling performance is modelled on that of Gollum from Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films, while the line “As you wish” (uttered by two different characters) instantly evokes Rob Reiner’s fairtytale parody The Princess Bride (1987)."
"As for the hellion after which the production is named, the monster-make up effects are top notch and matched by an excellent performance from Carter, who can tug on the heart strings one moment before being genuinely menacing the next."
"The work on the design of Rumpelstiltskin is great and far more menacing than Robert Carlyle’s Mr. Gold in television series Once Upon a Time. This Rumpelstiltskin looks unnerving and the performance of Joss Carter is especially strong."
"Most impressive of all though is Rumpelstiltskin himself. Played with the right amount of mischievousness by Joss Carter, his performance is considerably heightened by excellent prosthetic work from Will Harvey. Once he has emerged from the shadows, this Rumpelstiltskin is pleasingly repulsive and slimy, making for an entertaining villain that is a cut above what is usually found in this burgeoning field of low-budget horror."
"Carter, who portrays Rumpelstiltskin in an entertaining, wicked manner without crossing the line into camp."
"Carter's performance as the mischievous imp is unsettling, bringing a disturbing physicality to the role"

"..it must be said that Joss Carter and Hannah Baxter-Eve give it their all to make the script come alive – as well as Carter being magnificently mobile as the titular Rumpelstiltskin, dancing around and filling the screen with his menacingly comic persona."
"Delivering shocking transformations, disturbing creature effects, and unrelenting tension. Carter’s physical, unsettling portrayal of Rumpelstiltskin adds to the horror."

"Joss Carter deserves particular praise as Rumpelstiltskin. Working under layers of impressive practical make-up, Carter delivers a performance that not only entertains but also elicits sympathy for the woodland imp."
"Joss Carter’s take on the titular creature is animated and unnerving in all the right ways. Rather than dialing him up to eleven or playing for laughs, Carter threads his performance with unpredictability. His portrayal feels genuinely otherworldly, and thanks to the practical effects—especially the facial prosthetics design—he doesn’t just look like a threat; he feels like one."
"Then there is Joss Carter’s performance as Rumpelstiltskin, with the signature twitchy, Cockney-patterned eccentricity that Johnny Depp brings to Jack Sparrow, Willy Wonka, the Mad Hatter et cetera; "
"A hauntingly charming performance by its lead actor. The movie delves into the intricacies of its titular character, Rumpelstiltskin, who transcends the role of a mere villain. Instead, viewers are presented with a multi-dimensional character grappling with themes of greed, desperation, and the quest for identity. This depth invites audiences to empathize with Rumpelstiltskin, making the film more than just a simple fairy tale, but a poignant exploration of humanity’s darker desires."
"Rumplestiltskin is well realised and played to the hilt by Joss Carter, even if you do expect him to say “my precious” at any minute. He’s the best thing here."

"Rumpelstiltskin is deliciously played by Joss Carter. There are hints of fear in Rumpelstiltskin's character, which fits the power dynamics at play in this story that get more interesting with time. Carter is at least delivering on the chaotic performance that is crucial to any iteration of Rumpelstiltskin. He has a lot of creepy, sing-songy speaking idiosyncrasies and a physicality that suggests this is all a game to him, sashaying around Evalina. Yet there are also still hints of fear in Rumpelstiltskin's character, which fits the power dynamics at play, and they only get more interesting with time."

"A great performance by Joss Carter as the titular character alongside great prosthetics. I felt his (Joss Carter) performance with his body language could be likened to Terrifier’s Art the Clown which is a huge compliment."
